INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY 2019: A CELEBRATION OF OUR FAVE BADASS QUEENS

The future IS female.

We hear, read and speak those four words at least once or twice every week now; when we were once told “no”, we now stand up and say Y E S.

Friday, 8thMarch 2019 marked yet another year of celebrating the powerful, kickass, inspiring women across all worlds both fictional and real! From social media posts, workshops, marches and more, International Women’s Day 2019 was celebrated in style with everyone sharing their appreciation for the inspiring women in their lives.

Seriously, check out #internationalwomensday on Instagram and Twitter, the amount of love and appreciation pouring out for women all across the globe is honestly so heart-warming and empowering!

So as my contribution to International Women’s Day 2019, I have compiled a short list of some of my favourite kick butt, strong-minded and powerful women from literature, film and TV!

Mia Corvere – Nevernight by Jay Kristoff

She’s a fierce, fearless and ferocious assassin in training and she is the definition of badass!
When we are first introduced to her, she doesn’t hold back as she’s in the midst of murdering someone in order to be accepted into the Red Church. No messing around, not this woman.
Mia is a little spitfire, flawed but that’s what makes readers love her character so much. She’s sassy, independent and not afraid to prove her worth and right to be an assassin.

Honestly, I can’t think of a single reason Mia shouldn’t be on this list!

Libby Strout – Holding Up The Universe by Jennifer Niven

As I’ve said in my review of this book, Libby is a queen!

Despite being labelled “America’s Fattest Teen”, underneath all that Libby is a sixteen-year old pocket rocket with a whole lotta spunk.

Jennifer Niven takes the stereotype of a fat female protagonist and throws a curveball of reality at the reader as they’re introduced to Libby Strout, overweight, friend-less but fierce in every sense of the word.

From writing mean comments about herself on her bathroom mirror, chasing down a guy to stand up for a girl she’d just met to her wonderful dance audition to “The Warrior” by Scandal. Libby is truly unique in her own way, her confidence is bold and beautiful, and you can’t help but to applaud her, root for her and throw a punch into the air with pride for her.

Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow – Marvel Cinematic Universe
Whilst Natasha may occasionally seem like she’s all fight and no feel, Scarlett Johansson portrays her in a way where we get to see another side of her.
Witnessing that particular side of her open up to the idea of being with Banner is something very special considering her training in the Red Room where they might as well have wiped her of any form of emotion.

And c’mon, we all know it takes a particular type of badass to stand up against “mythological” gods and monsters when your only weapons are guns, gadgets and hand-to-hand combat!

Elle Woods – Legally Blonde

One of the greatest feminist icons in pop culture!
Legally Blonde is not a rom-com, it’s about the intelligent young Elle Woods coming into her own and realising her true potential.

She’s got wit, spunk and isn’t afraid to speak the truth. On the outside, she may seem like a stereotypical “dumb blonde”, but Elle has a lot more to her than people give her credit for and she isn’t afraid to school you if you underestimate her intelligence. I mean, she made it all the way to HARVARD LAW, people! After everyone didn’t believe she would ever get in, she proved them wrong! And that was just the first step on her way to realising who she is and the amazing things she can do when she puts her mind to them.

Okoye – Black Panther
The strong, fearless warrior who “flies in the face of our conventional ideas of femininity, while still functioning within her own definition of femininity”. Okoye is not to be messed with! When else have you seen a woman take charge of an all-female fighting force to protect a country but at the same time show she’s not just a warrior but has multiple dimensions of complex emotions to who she is, hmm?

These unique feminine attributes of Okoye and the Dora Milaje shine through, their fighting skills showcasing moves specifically designed by women for women. Fierce, powerful and fearless are just a few words to describe these military-minded female warriors who aren’t afraid to fight for their country and right to prove that women CAN kick butt!

The Alvarez Family – One Day At A Time
A sitcom centred around a female led Cuban family: recently divorced army veteran Penelope Alvarez, feminist and headstrong Elena and everyone’s favourite cheeky grandmother, Lydia. This show is nothing short of revolutionary, tackling sexism, diversity, religion, immigration and many other issues faced not only by teenagers, but people of various age groups.

I’m not wanting to spoil much, so I’ll leave the trailer for you to watch and honestly, go binge the first 3 seasons, you won’t regret it!

Elaine Benes – Seinfeld
I C O N I C.
Elaine stands out on her own as the supreme queen of this male dominated friendship group.
She’s a pocket rocket with a spunky attitude – how could you not love her?!

Unlike other women in her life, Elaine wants the simple life of enjoying a coffee with the boys, going to the movies and dancing like nobody’s watching – her dance moves are killer!

There you have it folks, my shortlist of female icons for 2019! I know there are a lot more I could include on this list, but I mean, I’m not about to write a book here.

Who’s your favourite feminist icon and why? Comment below!

Until next time,

Think Lovely Thoughts xo
